Becca’s Turn

Standard

Becca jotted down some notes and thoughts during our flight to Thailand (the Toronto-Tokyo leg), and she agreed to share them. Without further ado, voilà!

Settling in for the long haul

Settling in for the long haul

My plane ride to Japan!

Start: 12:25

Hour 1:
We got on the plane at 12:25 PM and it’s really boring, but fun to watch the plane take of from the window.

Hour 2:
Watching the movie “Katy Perry Part Of Me”: so far, so good.

Hour 3:
I’m still watching “Katy Perry Part Of Me”:  there is eight minutes left of the movie.

3:17… I finished the movie! Time to find another one. Hmmm?

Hour 4:
Now I’m watching “Corpse Bride” even though I’ve seen it already, it is fun to watch… If only it was still Halloween.

Hour 5:
Right now I’m just playing “Doodle Buddy”. I’m trying to do a smudged look. (It’s not working 😦 oh well…)

Hour 6:
For the past hour I’ve played a bunch of games on my iPod, they were Temple Run, Water Slide, Paper Toss and Magic Piano.

Hour 7:
Now I’m watching Big Bang Theory, (my mom really likes that show) and eating an awesome ham sandwich. The only thing I don’t like about the sandwich is that it’s cold :(.

Hour 8:
For the past few minutes I have been looking at how many minutes are left till we get to Tokyo. (We’re getting there at 3:03 PM Tokyo time, so I think that would be… 3:03 AM Orangeville time)

Hour 9:
Yay!!! Only three hours left till we get to Tokyo… 😦 I didn’t think of that… Grrrr. ( I forgot that we still had to go to Thailand.)

Hour 10:
I had a nap… TWO hours left till Tokyo!!!

Hour 11:
I can’t believe this, I slept!!! (And forgot to write this.)

Hour 12:
Ok, so now it’s technically ” midnight” in Orangeville… So I’m kinda really tired.

Hour… Wait, this last one’s like, a HALF AN HOUR!!! Personally I think that the flight went by like that (snap your fingers)! I think that’s a good thing?

What about you? Have you been on a plane for a REALLY, REALLY long time???

Flying to Bangkok

Standard

I realized I never talked about the actual trip from Canada to Thailand, so here we go. Considering it took 28 hours from door to door, so to speak, the children managed well. And did Becca and Keeran. Har har…

At Pearson, while we were having a snack before boarding, we spotted Santa Claus! He was having a snack too! I suppose the reindeer were on vacation leave, since he ended up boarding the very same flight as ours. He must have been on vacation too: dressed casually in a red trousers and suspenders, green sweater, and his beard needed a little grooming.

The first leg, a thirteen-hour flight to Tokyo was mostly uneventful. Aside from just a few families, and Santa of course, there was an inordinate number of scruffy backpackers and self-important business folk. They were everywhere! See?

Alaric, though technically “business folk” himself, couldn’t act self-important if he tried. You can’t possibly be all hoity-toity when you’re sitting next to your kids, and supervising meals in a tiny space, and praying for as few spills as possible.

During this flight I watched Rock of Ages; it turned out to be a really good remake of the stage version, which I had the pleasure of seeing in Toronto a couple years ago. Tom Cruise does well in roles where he’s obnoxious and self-involved, yet privately tortured, because he’s hiding his true kind-hearted nature. And yes, I did roll my eyes while writing that sentence.

The kids had a ball, what with their own little TV screens, headsets, and choice of programming. I’m so happy it doesn’t take much to entertain these two. And we never heard “Are we there yet?” Ok, hardly ever.

On the Tokyo-Bangkok leg, which was half the flying time as the first, it was more comfortable: odd, though the size of aircraft and seats were the same. Maybe it was the surprisingly comfortable headrests. Or maybe it was that the cultery in economy class was real. I haven’t seen real cutlery in economy since… well, never! Or maybe it was the beautifully dressed flight attendants. The women flight attendants were immaculate, in a structured silk-edged sarong, blouse and sash combo. Their make-up was done up like it was a pageant, and hair teased, shellacked and coiffed into perfect chignons.

Anyhoo, we made it safe and sound, in one piece, with no delays. What more can a non-business backpackless traveller ask for? Oh yeah, an airport welcome sign just for us!
